In this chapter, we draw on a qualitative study of dual-earner couples expecting their first child, and our aim is twofold. First, we describe new parents’ ideals about what they consider ‘the best for the child’ during the first years of life. Second, we investigate how these ideals are shaped and restricted by the institutional context (i.e. family policy and labour market characteristics), as well as by different constructions of mothering and fathering.
